What Your Result Means

How This Calculator Works

You enter the room's length, width, and type. The tool multiplies length × width to get square footage, then multiplies by a lumens-per-square-foot target that varies by room type (20 lm/ft² for bedrooms and living rooms up to 80 lm/ft² for bathrooms). It divides total lumens by 800 to estimate bulb count and groups bulbs into fixtures at roughly 2.5 per fixture.

Quick Questions

Why does the bathroom need so many more lumens than the bedroom?

Bathrooms involve close-up tasks like shaving, makeup, and grooming that need bright, even light. Bedrooms are primarily for rest and relaxation, so softer ambient lighting is typically sufficient.

Does ceiling height affect the result?

This calculator uses ceiling height as an input but the core formula is based on floor area and room type. In practice, rooms with very high ceilings (above 10 ft) may need additional lumens because light disperses more before reaching surfaces.

Should I use all overhead fixtures or mix in lamps?

Lighting designers generally recommend layering three types: ambient (overhead), task (desk or under-cabinet), and accent (wall sconces or spotlights). The fixture count here is a starting point for ambient coverage.

What about natural light from windows?

This estimate assumes artificial lighting only. Rooms with large windows or skylights may need fewer fixtures during daytime, but you should plan for adequate artificial light for evenings and overcast days.

Do paint color and wall finish matter?

Yes. Dark-colored walls absorb more light, so a dark room may need 10–20% more lumens than a similar room with light walls. Matte finishes also absorb more than glossy or semi-gloss surfaces.
