Estimated Cost: Total material cost based on the waste-adjusted area multiplied by your entered price per square foot.
Square Footage: The raw room area (length × width) before adding any waste allowance.
With Waste: The area you should actually purchase, including extra material for cuts, fit-ups, and mistakes.
Boxes Needed: Whole boxes of flooring to buy, rounded up, based on the coverage per box printed on the packaging.
How This Calculator Works
You enter the room's length and width in feet, a waste percentage, the square footage per box (from the product label), and your flooring's price per square foot. The tool multiplies length by width, adds the waste factor, divides by box coverage to round up to a whole box count, and multiplies by price for total cost.
Quick Questions
What waste percentage should I use?
10% is standard for straight-lay installations. Use 15% for diagonal layouts or rooms with many angles and closets.
How do I find coverage per box?
It's printed on the flooring box or product listing — typically 20–30 sq ft for laminate and vinyl plank.
Does this work for tile flooring?
For basic area and box estimates, yes. For tile-specific grout spacing, use the Tile calculator instead.
Should I add extra for pattern matching?
Yes. Wide-plank or patterned flooring can waste more material at seams. Add 5% on top of the standard 10% waste.
Does this include underlayment?
No. Underlayment is a separate material and is generally purchased to match the raw room area (no waste factor needed).
