Max towing capacity: The maximum trailer weight your vehicle can safely pull after accounting for its own weight and the tongue load pressing down on the hitch. Exceeding this risks brake failure, suspension damage, and loss of control.
Payload remaining: The difference between GVWR and curb weight — the total weight you can add (passengers, cargo, and tongue weight combined) before exceeding the manufacturer's safety limit.
Tongue weight percentage: The fraction of total trailer weight resting on your hitch ball. The industry-standard safe range is 10–15% of the gross trailer weight for conventional hitches.
Safety assessment: A quick check that your tongue weight falls in the 10–15% range. Below 10% can cause trailer sway; above 15% overloads the rear axle and reduces front-wheel traction.
How This Calculator Works
You enter your vehicle's GVWR (from the door placard or owner's manual), its curb weight, and the tongue weight of your loaded trailer. The tool subtracts curb weight from GVWR for payload, then subtracts tongue weight for max towing. It checks the tongue-to-total-trailer-weight ratio against the 10–15% safety window.
Quick Questions
Where do I find my vehicle's GVWR?
GVWR is printed on the federal certification label on the driver's door jamb and in the owner's manual. It is the maximum allowable total weight of the vehicle including passengers, cargo, and tongue weight.
What happens if tongue weight is too low?
If tongue weight drops below roughly 10% of gross trailer weight, the trailer can develop dangerous side-to-side sway, especially at highway speeds or in crosswinds. Redistributing cargo forward in the trailer usually fixes this.
Does this calculator account for GCWR?
No. This tool estimates based on GVWR and payload. Your vehicle also has a Gross Combined Weight Rating (GCWR) that limits vehicle-plus-trailer total. Always check GCWR in your owner's manual before towing.
Do passengers and cargo reduce my towing capacity?
Yes. Every pound of passengers and cargo you add reduces available payload, which in turn reduces your maximum safe towing weight by the same amount. Load your vehicle first, then check remaining capacity.
