What Your Result Means
- Allocated Amount per Person: A suggested spending target for each recipient, weighted by relationship closeness. Closer relationships (spouse, parent, child) receive a larger share than more distant ones (friend, coworker).
- Total Allocated: The sum of all individual gift amounts. Due to rounding, this should match your total budget closely but may differ by a few cents.
- Remaining: Any unallocated dollars left from your total budget after all recipients are assigned amounts. If this is zero, every dollar has been assigned.
How This Calculator Works
You set a total gift budget and add recipients, selecting a relationship type for each. Each relationship carries a preset weight (for example, Spouse = 1.5, Coworker = 0.5). The calculator sums all weights, then divides the total budget proportionally — each person's share equals the budget times their weight divided by the total weight. The weights are suggestions; they reflect common gifting norms, not rules.
Quick Questions
Can I change the relationship weights?
The built-in weights are fixed suggestions based on common gifting norms. If you want a different split, you can adjust by adding the same person twice with different relationship types, or use the result as a starting point and manually tweak amounts.
How much should I spend on gifts total?
Common advice is to set a gift budget you can afford without going into debt. Financial planners generally suggest keeping holiday gift spending to 1–1.5% of your annual gross income, though your personal situation and values should guide the number.
What if I have more recipients than this tool handles?
You can add as many recipients as you need — just click "Add Recipient" for each person. The budget will be divided proportionally across all of them based on their relationship weights.
Does this include sales tax or shipping?
No. The amounts shown are pre-tax gift values. Budget an extra 5–15% on top of the allocated amounts to cover sales tax, shipping, and gift wrapping if applicable.
